The story behind the collection:

I created these 12 pieces of artwork while staying in the gorgeous town of Ajijic in Mexico. My process for these pieces happened very intuitively and organically. I approached these paintings with no expectation of an outcome, but rather as a therapeutic practice. The exploration of colour and movement in watercolour paint is a beautiful thing to me. Watching the colours collide and mingle, drip and spread is mesmerising.

These were not initially meant to be landscapes. They started as loose abstract expressions. I got lost in the process and loved every minute of it. The next day I returned to look at them, and in each one I saw the subtle outlines of a scene, reminding me of my home in New Zealand. Beautiful hills and pristine water, moody skies and lush greenery. I decided to go back in with another layer and accentuate the landscape features that I saw just a faint suggestion of in the previous layer.

These 12 paintings were born out of a pure creative moment, inspired by beauty found in two lands – the one I inhabit and the one I’d just landed in.

The flying bird silhouettes represent the creative freedom I felt in this process. The boarders framing each piece are made from paper out of an old sketchbook found in my Aunty’s art studio. The aged paper added to the nostalgic feeling that these pieces evoked in me. I hand tore each piece to create a frame, as if looking through a window into an old memory.

As I was looking through the array of vintage papers in the studio space, I came across some old sheet music. I sat for a while reading the words of these songs. The lines you see incorporated in these frames sang out to me. I hope that some of them may touch you in the same way, and bring forth feelings or memories of something meaningful.

These paintings will forever have a special place in my heart. It is my privilege to share them with you.
